I guess that's life in the country, death is already around the corner. I understand that part of having animals is that they die, but we seem to have more than our share of them. In the past few years we have lost several dogs, chickens, a goat, and now a rabbit. The rabbit, named Peter, was Lauren's pet. He was very affectionate. He had the misfortune to be housed in a cage next to Isabella the Hun. Isabella is the most vicious rabbit I have ever seen. I never knew a rabbit could hiss, swipe at you and pounce. Well, apparently Peter laid too close to her side of the cage, and she slashed his testicles through the holes in the wire. When we arrived tonight, he was laying in the back of the cage. I thought he was just hot, as it was 100 degrees. I put his frozen sprite bottle in there for him to cool off and he didn't move. He just lay there twitching, his eyes rolling, and his nose moving. We rolled him to the front, and he was covered in fire ants. We washed him off, hoping to see how bad it was, and if we could help. He shrieked really loud (quite startling really), and started convulsing. I had Lauren pet him quietly and talk to him. We knew he was dying, and while it would have been hard for me to do, I would have shot him IF I had kept my .22 in the car. (I really need to keep it on me, darn.) He was suffering so much. I wonder if we hastened his death by drizzling water on him, but we were trying to help wash the ants off. Well, he died while Lauren was petting him.
We tried to dig a hole to bury him, but the ground is like cement. I suggested taking him home with us to bury in the back yard, but Lauren negated that idea, and said she would toss him over the fence in the corner, where we have been placing dead animals (chickens, a dog, and a dead hawk from the side of the road). I asked her if she was okay with him lying in the open, and she said yes. I think I was more upset than she was, but I hugged her, and asked if she was okay. I told her it was okay to cry if she was sad, she just gave me a look like I was crazy. After finding Duchess dead, I am worried about how this is affecting her. Maybe we should just get rid of all of our animals? I wonder if it's good for the kids to see this much death, though I know it is part of life, especially country life.
