Getting Motivated.....

I was actually up early (for me lately) around 9 a.m. I have been so tired lately, that I have been sleeping until 10 a.m. or so....I stay up until 1-2 a.m. most days, so I guess it balances out.

The thing is I don't get motivated to do anything until around 3-4 p.m., and when Rodney gets home I haven't done anything cleaning wise. I am not sure if is tiredness or depression. Makes me stop and think. It's a life draining feeling to have no energy. I have been lifting hand weights, and walking around the block, taking my vitamins, and trying to eat healthier, but nothing seems to help.

Please pray for me if you think about it.

The girls and I will be going to the Hannah Montana Movie this week, and Taylor's birthday is Sunday. I need to order a cake to take to church on Sunday, and we will probably go out to lunch for his birthday. He will be 19! I can hardly believe it, I was 19 when I had him and I felt so mature, looking at him, he is such a baby. It's strange.

I think Rodney will finish the coop tonight, and then we can move it out to the land this weekend. We need to price some fencing, and get it bought, so he can start on that next.

Rodney had already torn the wall out, and started putting the plywood back on..it's designed like paneling, so he just planned to paint it.

Okay, here is the laundry room finished (see the yellow part, that's what Rodney says is ugly. The color is called Melted Butter. I like it!)


This is the same corner as the first picture, just to show you what it looks like fixed.

Here's the far end of the coop, the door is on the right hand side, he is still connecting the hardware cloth to the frame. This thing is heavy! Three of us together had a hard time moving it. Once it's done, it will be loaded on the utility trailer and taken to the property, then we will move the hens and roosters. Roosters are crowing way too much. I will have to go out a couple of times a week to feed the chickens. Which is fine for me, I love going out to the land.

The door to the coop is on the lower left hand. The openings on the top are the hen boxes. There will be a door that lifts up to check the eggs. I don't know if you can tell but the roof is tin.

I was finally able to send a picture of the barn from Rodney's phone. He had taken a picture once he was finished. So, here it is....pretty good for a picture from a camera phone.

The new coop is designed after the one below, with a couple of alternations that Rodney is making.

Just came in after checking on progress, and it will have a tin roof on the A-frame portion, and is white paneled plywood on the two ends. He is working on the bottom caged/wire piece, and then he plans to add 4 X 4 legs under neath the area, so it will be even higher than the one in this picture. Once he is done, I will take a picture and post it here for everyone to see.

Thursday

Well the laundry room is done, Rodney also fixed the wood around the door frame, and fixed it so the back door closed without slamming it. Now, why couldn't he do that when we have been living here the past 15 years, I'll never know. LOL!

Made a run into town today to the credit union. I am getting really worried with all the banking woes, and the poor housing sales. Trying to leave it in God's hands and concentrate on other matters, but it's hard.

Purchased a few more rubber maid storage containers to keep on with the packing. I want to list the house by the end of February, and need to get going so the Realtor can stop by.

We cancelled the order on the storage building, Rodney was disgusted when he found out that it didn't come with everything pictured online. False advertising he claims, which I guess is true, I am just dissappointed, because it will take longer to get something built now. He called around and found a concrete company to come out and pour a slab, which is what he want as opposed to a wooden decking type of flooring.

Next on the list of repairs is: refinishing the dining room floor, cleaning up the yard, and replacing some rotted boards around the sides. Lastly, we will paint everything to give it a fresh look.

Took Taylor to college tonight, and by the time I got back home, he was done. His class is supposed to get out at 10 pm, but the instructor let them go at 7:30 instead. Man, I could have waited at the school and saved the gas if I had known.

Now, we are sitting around the fire (Rodney is in bed) trying to keep warm. Lauren is on the other computer playing games (though at almost 11pm, she needs to go to bed). Hannah and Muffin are asleep on the couch.

I just did our preliminary taxes, and while we won't have to pay, so far, we won't be getting much back. I always have the least taken out of his paychecks to help us through the year, but I sure do miss those high tax refunds.

Cookie Recipe

Old Fashioned Snickerdoodles

1/2 cup butter ( margerine just won't do)

1/2 cup butter flavored shortening

1 1/2 cup sugar

2 eggs

*** Beat these ingredients together until creamy *****

In a seperate bowl add

2 2/3 cup flour

2 tsp cream of tartar

1 tsp baking soda

1/4 tsp salt

**** Mix all the dry ingredients *** Add the dry ingredients to the egg & sugar mix and blend *****

Roll the dough into small balls, then dip in a sugar and cinnamon, and place on greased cookie pan.

Place in a preheated 400 degree oven. Bake for aprx. 8 minutes until crackled on top and lightly browned on bottom.

YIELDS: 3 dozen

New House...kind of

I ordered our "semi-new" home today. It will be a temporary place until the house sells, and give us a place to start moving stuff too. It is a 12 X 24 ft storage building from Home Depot.
I didn't notice that it doesn't come with the actual windows themselves, but I was able to find three windows on craigslist for $50.00. I plan to go get them tomorrow. They are new and still in their wrapper.

I was very busy today, and was able to get the new address assigned to the property, pay the first land payment, eat lunch with Perla, pick up lumber, flooring and paint from Home Depot, make dinner, and then order the building this evening. It will be delivered to the property in about a week! I am so excited! It is a building kit, so Rodney will just have to put it together.

One more step closer!

Rodney is finishing up the remodeling of the laundry room. I purchased a quart of semi-gloss, mildew resistant paint in the shade "Melted Butter". I really like it, but Rodney said it was ugly, but I still like it, plus, we are moving. The new owners may not like it, and paint over it anyway.

A few pictures....

Here is our puppy Muffin. When she is cold, she finds the nearest space heater that is on, and will park herself in front of it. It's funny, because she will turn herself around to warm the other side when she gets too hot. She's such a freak!

This is our sweetie Chip. He can sleep anywhere. He loves sleeping on the coffee table, which is directly in front of the wood stove. Normally, he sleeps on the glass top, but we had been homeschooling in the living room this day, due to the chilly weather, and he climbed up in the crayon box and fell asleep, using the potato chip bag as a pillow. He slept here almost all day.


Here is Lauren and Muffin snuggling the other morning to keep warm. Muffin has a serious thing with staying warm. She is ALWAYS cold. She loves to snuggle behind the pillows on the couch, and under comforters. Muffin isn't allowed on the beds, but did manage to sneak into the girls room somehow. I found them on the bed laying like this, and had to take a picture.
The other night it was 28 degrees. The woodstove was struggling to keep the house warm. Hannah fell asleep on the couch, and the puppy, Muffin, and Lily snuggled up beside her. The funny thing is, these two members of our families, have Hannah on the bottom rung of the pecking order, or family pack. They absolutely do not like her, but they sure did snuggle up to keep warm. We had to have Lily declawed, because she was always scratching Hannah, even if Hannah didn't bother her. She would actually attack her from across the room. Muffin, loves to snap at Hannah all the time, if we aren't in the room.

Lauren's Daddy bought her this four wheeler. His idea is that she can use it to check the mail, and to help around the farm. It was supposed to get here for Christmas, but we waited too late to order, and it just got here last week. She loves dirt bikes, just like her daddy, and is really excited about this little ATV. It is all electric, and has a remote kill switch that her daddy can activate if necessary. Notice her helmet and gloves that match...fashion at all times....this picture was taken at her Papa's farm about 3 miles from here..

Be diligent

This verse spoke to me this morning. I have been trying to rush DH and myself to get the house in shape and ready to sell, so we can move. I feel some urgency, and am wondering if it is me or God? I have been praying for motivation, and have seen this urgency as the answer to my prayer, but I also need to realize I need to make sounds plans, and not rush into things without knowing what we will do.

Rough times ahead

I have been paying close attention to the news and reports of a recession/inflation/depression type event possible in the near future.

I just wanted to encourage anyone reading this blog to please prepare and try to get read for some hard times. I clearly remember the 1970's, though I was a young child ;-)

I am fully knowledgeable that my DH could lose his job in the near future, which is one of the reasons I am trying to downsize. Selling our house and getting out from under the mortgage payment, adding to my pantry to help with the lean times, of a smaller paycheck and not enough month, and trying to pay off any debt that I have, though I don't stress about that..I don't owe much, but what I do are medical bills that I am waiting for the insurance company to pay for..

Electric bills are projected to double, and may triple this year. Are you prepared? What would you do if you couldn't afford to pay the electric bill anymore?

Ace Hardware has a really great wood stove for about $149.00. For a total of $200.00 you could install a wood stove to help heat your home, and provide an alternate cooking source. That $200.00 is probably less than most people's electric bill now. If I didn't work at keeping my bill low it would climb into the $400 range. I am happy that it hovers between $79-$110 a month.

The three things you need to think about are food, water and shelter. These are the ONLY necessities.

While not agreeing with their belief system, the LDS have a great website on preparation. Check it out. Again, while not agreeing with their sole premise, FEMA has a few good ideas on their site.

Keep it real, keep it simple, keep it quiet.

Global Warming? I don't think so....

Hmmm...I think we are heading into the next ice age. Everyone I talk to has record lows, and record amounts of snow. Snow in California! How crazy is that? And it got down to 29 last night, and 28 tonight.

I guess by now you have figured out that my computer woes seem to be solved for now. Apparently, I was having a problem with Internet Explorer. My sister suggested I download Fire fox or Fox fire, something like that...it works a lot better now, and the computer is back to being lightening fast!

It's been pretty busy here lately, though I can't for the life of me tell you what happened. I have been unmotivated in the cleaning and packing arena. It's also very hard to wash clothes with the washer sitting in the middle of the back yard, hooked to the garden hose. I can't wait until Rodney finishes the laundry room. When it's cold, all he wants to do is hunker down by the wood stove. He did take the girls riding on their new four wheeler (I will post the picks as soon as I locate my camera bag. Took it away from Hannah, and now I can't find it.)

Off to make dinner, just wanted to post for a few seconds.

Computer Woes

I am posting really quick, before the computer messes up again. I have been unable to stay on long as it closes me out, can't even run the virus scan, as it locks up....trying to figure out what to do...pretty sure it is a virus, because both computers are doing the same thing, and they both run off of the wireless server. Need to talk to my sister about this...she's the expert.

Can't log into any of the forums I am a member of, it locks up, can't check my email for long either. It's very frustrating.

Spent the day cleaning out the laundry room, as we apparently have had a leak for awhile behind the washer, and it caused mold, which ate the entire sheetrock. Rodney took all the sheetrock off from about waist high to the floor boards.

We are going to replace that area with plywood, then put white beadboard over top, redo the floor in plywood, and rolled vinyl linoleum, to get it presentable enough to sell. If someone else wants to change something they can do so after we sell it. Nothing special was done to this house when we bought it, so we are just going to replace the evidently rotten boards around the house, paint, replace a few light fixtures and outlets, and call it a day. Probably end up spending $1,000 or more just to sell the house. Very frustrating. More so for Rodney, as he has to do most of the work. This moving will be rough, as a lot of it is heavy lifting, which I just can't do anymore, due to my arthritis, and tendency to break bones easily. Taylor will help, but he isn't very good at heavy stuff. He needs to lift some weights to get prepared LOL!

Took Taylor to the doctor so his leg could be looked at, Dr. said it looks okay but to keep an eye on it, and gave him a Teatnus/Pertussis injection.

Waiting for the new four wheeler to be delivered, it arrived at the dock in San Antonio, and was supposed to be delivered to Rodney's work. This is a small one for me and Lauren to use out on the land. I prefer to walk, but it is a LONG walk to the front gate to check the mail, plus, I am sure Lauren will get a lot of use out of it...I am going to get Rodney to make a little trailer for it, so I can take hay out to the animals.

Laundry Day

Today was a chilly day ALL day. We had the fire going all day. It is supposed to rain tonight and tomorrow. I did laundry, washing, folding and making a new batch of laundry soap. Lauren helped me by stirring the soap mixture, while I added the water.

Cleaned up the living room, bathroom and did dishes, but they have to be done again. Man, I hate doing dishes.

Made great tacos for dinner. Diced fajita chicken on corn tortillas with cheddar and homemade hot sauce. With white cake for dessert. I didn't have any icing, but I don't think the guys cared, they took a huge chunk of cake with a huge glass of milk and seemed happy. The entire cake is gone.

The fire is dying out now, and I will let it, as we are heading to bed early...everyone seems wiped out today.

The realtor called this evening and she is coming out on Friday, to bring me some comparables, and some ideas of what to do with the house. I am not sure if I will sign with her, or if I am going to do "For Sale by Owner" . Still doing research and planning.....

School Is Hell

Maybe, just maybe...it will convince someone to take their child out of public school and homeschool them. I fully believe that homeschooling is THE choice for 99% of families. If parents would just stop being selfish, and doing what is most convenient the world of education would open for their child.

Today has been another great Sabbath. Attended church today, bringing along a friend of my daughter Lauren. After church we came home for lunch, and a short rest before heading out to take Rodney lunch. He and Taylor worked on the barn, getting all the frame up, and putting the tin on the back side. Two more sides and the roof to go.

There were a couple of large grass fire out our way today. Had me a little worried with Rodney welding. A small grass fire started under the barn while we were there, due to the pieces dropping from his welding equipment. I stomped it out, and kicked dirt over it. Fires are starting so easily around us lately. New Years was an especially tough time in our area for grass fires.

Picked up Candi tonight for the Ladiesbible Study. We were late, as I waited for Rodney to come home to watch the girls and he didn't show up, so I ended up taking them with me. They behaved and I was very proud of them..they played quietly and without fighting once during the entire time. Stopped to get them dinner on the way home, it was going on 8:30 p.m. and were hungry. Candi and I then stopped at Starbucks for a treat before heading home for the night. The baby was screaming her face off, evidently tired, hungry or just plain mad. Pretty much cured my girls of wanting another baby. Poor thing! Here's a picture of Candi and baby Samantha

It's kind of chilly tonight, and I was freezing! I was so hoping there was a fire lit in the house when I got home. There was! Rodney had gone to bed, but Taylor was up tending the fire. Bless him! He's now gone to bed, and I am sitting here by the fire trying not to fall asleep. Hannah is passed out on the couch, and the puppy is trying to wiggle in behind her to keep warm. Lauren is on the computer, dressing her "Swinky" girl. It's about bed time at 11:20 p.m.! Time to put another log on the fire...oh! I was glad to see that Rodney had taken the time to split more logs, it was getting hard to find stove wood in correct lengths/sizes to fit in the stove. It needed to be done, but he kept putting it off. If I knew how to use the log splitter I'd have done it by now.

Well, I think it's time for bed, have a busy day tomorrow, as it is LAUNDRY DAY!

No errands today!

Today is Thankful Thursday and I am thankful that I didn't have any errands to run today. I was able to stay home all day..I didn't get much done, made the bed, washed dishes and did 2 loads of laundry. I fed the chickens too, but that's about it.

Rodney came home with Blake and along with Taylor they loaded the sheet metal on the trailer. It was during this time that Taylor sliced his leg really bad. I think he needs stitches in the middle of the cut, it looks pretty bad, and I almost got sick, cleaning the dirt and grass out of the wound. I poured Peroxide on it, then coated it with Neosporin, and then placed a large band aid on it. I will look at it again later tonight, clean it again, and put some Butterfuly closures on it.

The guys have left to go to Rodney's dad's to load the tractor and welder, to get ready for working all weekend at the land. So, it's just the girls and I here. I am making shells and cheese for dinner, and watching Mulan on the Disney Channel.

ETA: I want to try and keep track of what I eat and the exercise that I get.
I didn't get much exercise today, I did walk around the block last night with Lauren.
Today, I had a cheesburger for lunch (bad me) iced tea, during the day I also ate a tangerine, a bowl of mac and cheese, 1 large glass of orange juice with 1/4 cup of cranberry-grape juice mixed in and vanilla cream. Today was a bad diet day....

Couldn't take any vitamins today as I have a bone scan in the morning. I have felt blah all day! Just wanting to sleep even though it was a beautiful day outside today. I did walk out and feed and water the chickens.

RV Shopping

Things have been hectic as usual around here. Several of us getting over being sick, winding up the holiday happenings, and getting back to our normal routine, as well as, starting our school work again.

I found a cheap RV on craigslist that I really wanted to purchase. We went to look at it, and while I think it is correctly priced, I'd rather spend the money on fencing and lumber, as the RV needed too much work. I was dissappointed. I really wanted "something" to fall back on, just in case our house sells quickly.

The realtor was scheduled to come out yesterday afternoon, but returned late from Christmas break, so we are rescheduling her visit.

In the mean time, getting my car cleaned out, detailed, etc., to get ready to post on craigslist for sale. Also, making lists of how to downsize even more. We are considering doing away with the Internet, cell phone and home phone, which means limited ways to contact those on the outside, but I am trying to save as much money as possible, and these things won't be available at our new homesite. (Cell phone service is sketchy at best, no phone service, and there is internet available with something called "Wild Blue" but it costs a lot.

Heading out to town early in the morning for another appointment, sigh! I have a doctor's appointment on Friday morning. All these errands, when all I want is to stay home. It can be very frustrating.

Hmmm, I am tired, so off to bed, it's almost 11:30 p.m.!

The ladies started a new bible study last night. We are doing a Beth Moore study titled Living Free, Learning to Pray God's Word. I haven't participated in a long time for various reasons, these being driving back into town Sunday evening, and because normally I have classes scheduled. I am taking a break this next semester, so will have time to complete this sudy.

Got up early this morning to pick up the house. I had cleaned Saturday, but of course the house blew itself apart yesterdary while I was gone. For the most part the house is picked up, though sorting through the never ending clutter will be waiting for me still. Manged to get most of the dishes done, the bathroom cleaned, and a load of laundry put in....need to finish my room.

Already went up the street to put the Angel Food Ministries order in for the month. A couple of ladies at church gave me a check for their order, which is great. I am glad that this is able to help them out, food wise. The price went up this year from $25.00 to $30.00.

Waiting for Candi to come over this morning, she should be here anytime. Gotta go get lunch started.

It's a Beautiful Day!

We are expecting a high of 79 today with only a low of around 55. The sun is shining and the sky is a beautiful blue. Days like this seem to give me the energy I need to get through the day. I have already cleaned the house, with the exception of my bedroom, and I need to make laundry soap and get more laundry done. Way behind, what with the Christmas "to dos" and illness this past week. This was the first really major family illness in about a year, and I suspect that Rodney brought it home with him from work.

Off to make the laundry soap, and get the guys some lunch.....they are out putting the barn up at the land, and hopefully getting some fencework done too. Rodney's dad is going out with his tractor to do some shredding of the fields. This is really helping us a lot. The estimates we received were between $1300 and $1700 to get this done, contracted out, and would have cost about $600 for us to rent a tractor and do it. Rodney just supplies his dad's diesel for the tractor, and it works out great.

Back from the land..the guys got all the posts up for the barn, all that s left is to put the aluminum siding on the sides and roof...it's 20 X 20, which should be plenty big enough for a horse and a goat, plus maybe the chickens. Haven't decided if I will have the coop in the barn or on the outside.

Took the guys brisket and sausage sandwiches plus iced tea. Hannah (DD-4) evidently ate some of the brisket sandwich (though I bought her chicken tenders) and said she wanted that one in the future because it was "tasty". That's her word lately. She asked if we were still getting cows. I said yes. She said good, because meat's tasty! That made me laugh....definitely not a budding vegetarian.

Measured the distance from the front gate to the well. It's 531 feet. We purchased 21 Black (at a cost of $80.0) Walnut trees to plant along the driveway on that one side. They should arrive in March. Walked around the pond with the girls. Lauren noticed a frog in a hog print that had filled with water. I poked it with a stick to see if it was living, but it didn't move. I flipped it out of the hole, and it opened it's eyes. I picked it up to show the girls, and we looked at it's long legs, it's white under belly and brown and spotted topside. It then leaped out of my hand, and swam away deeper into the cat tails. Tadpoles are everywhere in various stages of growth, along with tiny frogs the size of my thumbnail. Easy pickings for some sharp eyed bird. No wonder we have thousands of birds hanging around the pond. They appear to be mostly cardinals, sparrows, a few unidentified water type birds, and a Red tailed hawk that sits in a dead mesquite tree. Found a dead racer snake the other day, but the hawk carried itoff before the kids could see it.

I drew a diagram of the lay out of the land, and where I want everything to go. Maybe one day I will draw it out on the computer and post it here, that way I will have a record of it and can share it with everyone. I am trying to lay everything out according to the advice in several homesteading books I have...1) the Have More Plan by the Robinsons 2) One Acre and Security by Angier and 3) Five Acres and Independence by Kains. Two other books I look through often are The Complete Homesteading Book by David Robinson and the Encyclopedia of Country Living by Carla Emery. These have provided a wealth of informatin over the last year and a half that I have been working towards getting a larger homestead.

Working on the order for all my fruit trees and berry bushes. We plan on mostly dwarf trees right now, they produce faster, and I'd like to see something sooner. I'll plant standard size trees too, but heavy on the dwarf size.

Time to get ready for the Sabbath. Hope everyone has a good time of worship tomorrow.

Thankful Thursday

I told some other people today that I was thankful for not being as sick as others in my family. The stomach virus is going around my family. While I didn't feel well today, I was in much better shape, so I could help Rodney and the girls. The girls are up and around now, but their dad is passed out on the couch. He seems to be much worse. I surmise it is because of his poor diet. He won't eat healthy, take vitamins, exercise or anything related. I did get him to eat some chicken soup today (which he hates), drink some sprite, electrolytes, take a vitamin and some vitamin C. He perked up a little, but is sleeping now. At least the vomiting and "other" has stopped.

The girls and I eat healthier, more fruits, fruit juices, vitamins, herbal meds, exercise, fresh air and such.

Around lunch time, he was feeling well enough to go check the well at the land. The electricity was turned on out there yesterday. As soon as he flipped the breaker, the pump turned on and water started rushing down the irrigation pipe to the pond. We walked over there and sat for an hour talking while the girls played in the increasing water at the shallow end. There was a mound of tadpoles buried in the mud at that end of the hog wallow, but they are now swimming busily all over. The pond has water in it, but the shallow end had dried up to thick clayey mud. The girls got their muck boots stuck, and Lauren had to pull Hannah's foot free.

They spent the time floating leaves down the stream of water, and stomping into the mud until the water got above their boot tops. We then laid down on a sweater listening to the sound of the water rushing down the hill, the wind blowing the prairie grass, the sound of the frogs peeping and the flock of cardinals and other land and water birds chattering away.

We came back home, and the girls are playing on the computer, and Rodney is sleeping.

The fire has burned out and my feet are cold. Supposed to get down to 39 tonight, which is up from 22 degrees last night. I forgot to bring my poinsettias in last night and they are black in places this morning.

Happy New Year!

I know I am a day late on wishing everyone a Happy New Year, but we have been busy. Monday night, Blake came over with fireworks for the kids. They blew up several coke bottles and caught the grass on fire. I was slightly preturbed, but they stomped out the flames, and we poured water on the grass. The fire department was busy all night running back and forth putting out fires. The police also stopped here twice, warning us and other neighbors to not use aerial fireworks at all.

On New Year's Day we spent all day at the land. The guys shredded the brush, and moved large rocks to form a fire pit. We ate lunch out there, and walked around.

Today the electric company came and turned the power on, that way we can get the well working.

It's very cold today, and supposed to get down to 28 tonight. Rodney is sick in bed with a stomach virus. I hope we don't all get sick too, I will need to clean the bathroom later.
